Executive Producer, Michael Killips, BA, Director, Editor, and
Videographer, University of Wisconsin-Madison, School of Nursing
and Television Studio
The purpose of this powerful, research and clinically based,
teaching videotape is to describe, in detail, the psychosocial
effects of antepartum bed rest upon women and their families.
The national audience for the film is health care providers,
particularly practicing nurses in a variety of educational and
practice positions. Four women on extended periods of bed rest
and one partner (husband) were interviewed about their experience
of antepartum bed rest and the difficulties they had during
both the antepartum and postpartum period. The individuals who
were interviewed represent families from a variety of ethnic
and socioeconomic groups. Women were on extended periods of
hospital and/or home bed rest (>42 days) for a variety of
diagnoses and delivered a healthy newborn. Interviews took place
in the home at various times during the postpartum. Content
includes a description of what bed rest was like for the woman
and what was most difficult, and the effect of bed rest upon
maternal mood, the family, finances, and postpartum recovery.
This videotape was made to increase health care providers' understanding
of and sensitivity to patient and family issues regarding bed
rest treatment. Increased understanding of these issues will
enable nurses to practice cutting edge nursing that is evidence
based.
This videotape evolved from the producer's program of research
on pregnancy bed rest and from antepartum support groups which
she conducts in the hospital each week. Open ended questions
for the interview were first pilot tested in a national random
survey of women on bed rest and their partners, and subsequently
used in the videotaping. Responses selected for the inclusion
in the videotape were consistent with the central themes identified
in a national survey of men and women (Image, 1997; In press,
1999). A draft videotape was subsequently shown to 56 obstetric
nurses at a national conference and suggestions were incorporated
into final editing of the videotape. Some comments from nurses
were:
"Bedrest effects all aspects of life. I knew the effect
of bedrest but I just didn't fathom how extensive it was".
"How depressing each person's experience was! As a
nurse we "know" it must be, but your video bring this
to a painful new awareness. Nurses must be made fully aware
of all aspects of bed rest and effects on entire family, i.e.
social, financial, psychological."
"Patients were very very honest. Cinematography very
nice! Different backgrounds, different textures. Music very
appropriate. Focused both on the patient and the family."
The videotape has been used to conduct inservice education
about the effects of bed rest, to educate nursing students on
both the undergraduate and graduate level, and in both a national
educational presentations. This videotape is recommended for
health care provider education only. Produced in August 1998.
