TECHNOLOGY AT THE BOLTON SCHOOL

The Bolton School of Nursing, as an integral part of Case Western Reserve University and the city of Cleveland, Ohio, is proud of the technological facilities that it provides for its students and faculty. A summary of these offerings is provided below.
An Intelligent Community

Cleveland was recently named by the Intelligent Community Forum as one of the world's "Top Seven Intelligent Communities of 2006" due to its provision of ultrabroadband internet access via its numerous institutions, organizations, and governmental agencies, which are all part of the OneCleveland network. Case Western Reserve University has played a vital role in Cleveland's world-class achievement, shared only with Seoul, South Korea; Ichikawa, Japan; Manchester, England; Taipei, Taiwan; Tianjin, China; and Waterloo, Canada.

An Integrated Campus

Case has approximately 1260 Cisco wireless access points installed across campus, so that students are capable of logging into the university's fiber gigabit network from virtually anywhere, including all libraries, classroom buildings, and residence halls. The network provides computing speeds exponentially faster than cable or DSL. For those living off-campus, the VPN system provides a secure and efficient method of accessing information that is unavailable to those outside the Case community. The "Serious Technology at Case" pamphlet, available in PDF format, addresses many of the questions asked by prospective and newly admitted students.

Individualized Access

All students receive their own unique Case UserID, which furnishes them with access to not only their email (which is the main mode of communication throughout campus), but to their courses, Blackboard, registration, library services, and much more. This UserID remains active

One key tool that the Case UserId provides is access to the MyCase portal, which is a customizable page for all members of the Case community. It offers students easy access to their email, academic records, campus news, personal and event calendars, frequently used links, and a host of other information. The Open Student Television Network, available via this portal, provides secure access to broadcast television programming from content providers such as NBC Universal, FOX, and Starz!-Encore--all on student laptops and PCs.

Up-to-Date Tools and Information

The Case Software Center is a large collection of free software essentials for all Case students. These include full versions of Microsoft Office, Adobe Acrobat, Symantec AntiVirus, Photoshop, Macromedia Studio, and many more packages. In addition, the site provides access to software through limited licensing (using a Keyserver account) or discounts, such as Endnote, Snap Survey, SPSS, and more.

The University's Information Technology Services (ITS) department is another great resource available to all Case students. ITS sets up email accounts, offers recommendations on the purchase of computer equipment, provides critical software updates and virus warnings, and provides access to a wide array of in-depth technical support via the Help Desk. The A to Z index of services comprehensively lists everything in detail.

Cutting-Edge Technology

At the Bolton School, students can take advantage of not only wireless internet access throughout the building, but also a number of other technological amenities. Our IT team offers Help Desk user support for many computer-related issues, and Bolton School students have access to four Technology-Enhanced Classrooms (TEC), which are equipped with a variety of multimedia features such as video projectors, lecturns with LCD computer displays, document cameras, laptop connections, stereo audio, and VCR/DVD players. In addition, the Bolton School's Learning Resource Center (LRC) is made up of the Cyber-Café, the Center for Bioinformatics and Health Promotion, the Multi-Media Simulation Center, and the Clinical Teaching Center. Via these facilities, students can advance their nursing skills by active participation in hands-on training sessions that demonstrate the real-life aspects of nursing.

A Centralized Resource

Finally, the Bolton School has established an internal website ("intranet") called Front Door, which functions as a one-stop shop for connecting its faculty, staff, and students together. Front Door offers nursing students a host of helpful links, email access, school event calendars, special announcements, message boards, job postings, and other important information.
